A New Approach

When I started writing here, I committed to maintaining consistency with faith that themes would begin to present themselves. Turns out, that’s working. Here’s my latest:

I’ve been thinking a lot about life, creativity, and work lately. Looking back, I’ve always been in a hurry. Maybe it’s ADHD, maybe it’s childhood influences, maybe it’s our modern instant gratification culture. Maybe, and this is wild, it’s all three.

I’ve noticed that all this hurrying has led me to abandon projects when they don’t produce quick results. And I’m sick of that.

As 2024 came to a close and I started thinking about how I wanted next year to be, I had feelings come up that have become all too familiar of late. It’s a dull-ache cocktail of shame, doubt, dissatisfaction, and emotional fatigue.

In the past, I’ve had countless projects, goals and desires that I’ve begun pursuing but abandoned when the going got tough, the results didn’t come in quickly, or the process got boring. Now, I find myself with little to show for my 42 years that I’m actually proud of, and I want to begin changing that.

While I don’t believe in the efficacy of “New Year’s Resolutions” per se, any opportunity to pause, reflect, and reinvent can be powerful moments if we seize them. For me, this new year coincided with a confluence of ideas from a bunch of folks whose work provoked my thinking and led me to a shift in my approach to work and life. It’s a shift from fast to slow, from short to long, from broad to deep, from showy to quiet, from crowded to connected, from “jack of all” to “master of one,” and, I think most importantly, from remaining ignorant about my ADHD to embracing it.

Consider this post an introduction to a series I’ll be writing on those topics.

Meanwhile, if you want to check out some of the work that has inspired these shifts for me, here’s a rabbit hole list:
